On 9th December 2018, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu jointly inaugurated the Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL).
Key points:
i. KIAL is the fourth international airport in the state. The other three are Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode and with the commissioning of KIAL, Kerala becomes the state with the highest density of airports in the country.
ii. Vijayan and Prabhu flagged off the first flight, an Air India Express with 180 passengers bound for Abu Dhabi.
iii. Spread across 2,000 acres and costing close to Rs. 1,800 crore, the new airport in Kannur can reportedly handle around 2,000 passengers at a time and will serve more than 1.5 million international passengers yearly.
