India held big state elections in 2026. Five states and one union territory voted in April. Results came on May 4 and changed many governments.
These elections happened in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry. People chose new leaders for next five years. Students preparing for UPSC exams find this very important.
What Happened in Each State?
West Bengal has 294 seats. BJP and its friends won 209 seats. TMC got only 80 seats this time.
This is a big change from 2021. BJP seats jumped from 77 to 209. People wanted change after long TMC rule.
Tamil Nadu has 234 seats. New party TVK won 108 seats. TVK is led by actor Vijay. DMK lost many seats.
Kerala has 140 seats. Congress group UDF won 92 seats. They beat the old government after 10 years. BJP also gained seats.
Assam saw BJP win again. They kept power with strong support. People like their work on roads and jobs.
Puducherry has 30 seats. BJP group NDA won 17 seats. They will rule this small area again.
Big Changes in Politics
BJP grew big in East and South India. They used temple work and new citizen laws to win. This shows they can win anywhere now.
TVK is a new face in Tamil Nadu. Young people voted for jobs and less old party rule. It broke the two old party fight.
Congress lost in most places. They only did okay in Kerala. This asks if they can come back strong.
In Kerala, Congress came back after long time. Assam BJP stayed strong with good work done. Each place has its story.
What This Means for Rulers
New governments will make new rules. BJP states want more roads and health cards for all. Tamil Nadu may give jobs to youth fast.
Centre and states may argue more on money. States want their fair share for plans like farm help. This tests team work in India.
No one party won alone everywhere. Some may need friends to rule. This links to idea of all India one election time.
Why UPSC Students Must Study This
UPSC asks about India team work between centre and states. These results show how states pick leaders. It links to our Constitution rules.
