Easy Explanation – Even a Class 8 Student Can Understand!

You have used Google Pay or PhonePe to send money to a friend in seconds, right? Now imagine doing the same thing – but sending money from India to Nepal instantly, without going to a bank or paying high charges. That is exactly what UPI-NPI does. And it just launched on June 9, 2026. Let us understand this step by step.

📱 First, What is UPI?

UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface. It is India’s digital payment system that lets you send and receive money instantly using just a mobile number or UPI ID.

You use it every day through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. No need to share your bank account number. No waiting. Money reaches in seconds.

📌 Fun Fact: UPI currently processes nearly 18 billion transactions every single month – making it one of the largest real-time payment systems in the entire world!

🇳🇵 What is NPI?

NPI stands for National Payments Interface. It is Nepal’s own digital payment system – just like UPI but for Nepal.

NPI is run by Nepal Clearing House Ltd. (NCHL), which is the main payments authority in Nepal. Think of NCHL as Nepal’s version of India’s NPCI.

🤝 So What is UPI-NPI?

UPI-NPI is a payment link between India’s UPI system and Nepal’s NPI system. It was officially launched on June 9, 2026 by NPCI International (India) and Nepal Clearing House Ltd. (Nepal).

June 9, 2026
The day UPI and NPI got connected – allowing real-time, 24/7, low-cost money transfers between India and Nepal for the very first time.

Now a person in Delhi can send money to their family in Kathmandu instantly – just like sending money to a friend in Mumbai. No bank visits. No expensive fees. No waiting for days.

🔍 How Does UPI-NPI Work? Step by Step

Step 1 – Open your UPI app
Open any UPI app on your phone like Google Pay or PhonePe.

Step 2 – Enter the Nepal user’s VPA or mobile number
VPA means Virtual Payment Address – it is your UPI ID like name@bank. You do not need to share any bank account details. This keeps the transfer safe and private.

Step 3 – Enter the amount and send
The money reaches Nepal instantly – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No need to wait for bank working hours.

🧮 Easy Example: Imagine your uncle works in Delhi and sends money to your family in Nepal every month. Earlier he paid 8 to 10% as fees to remittance agents. Now with UPI-NPI, he can send money in seconds at almost zero cost. For millions of families, this is a huge saving every month!

🌍 Why is This Important for India and Nepal?

👨‍👩‍👧 Millions of Nepali Workers in India
Around 8 million Nepali citizens work in India. Every month they send money back home to their families. Earlier this was expensive and slow. UPI-NPI makes this fast and almost free.

💸 Old Method Was Very Costly
Traditional remittance channels used to charge 8 to 10% as fees. So if someone sent Rs. 10,000 – the family received only Rs. 9,000 or less. UPI-NPI brings this cost down to almost nothing.

🤝 Stronger India-Nepal Relations
This launch happened during Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal’s official visit to India in June 2026. It shows how closely the two countries are working together on digital and economic cooperation.

🌏 Part of G20 Vision
The G20 group of countries has been pushing for cheaper and faster cross-border payments globally. UPI-NPI directly supports this goal and positions India as a global leader in digital payments.

🚀 How Big is UPI Going Global?

This is not the first time UPI has gone international. India has already connected UPI with many other countries. Here is the list:

  • 🇧🇹 Bhutan – first country to adopt UPI
  • 🇸🇬 Singapore – Indian travellers can pay using UPI
  • 🇫🇷 France – UPI accepted at shops and tourist spots
  • 🇲🇻 Maldives, 🇲🇺 Mauritius, 🇶🇦 Qatar – UPI payments live
  • 🇰🇭 Cambodia – UPI QR payments launched on June 2, 2026
  • 🇳🇵 Nepal – UPI-NPI real-time remittance launched June 9, 2026
📌 Remember for UPSC: India is also in talks to link UPI with the European payment system (EPI) and countries in Southeast Asia. UPI is becoming India’s biggest digital export!
